Frequently Asked Questions
-
Diamond Memoirs is a guided memoir service for older adults and others in later life who want to preserve meaningful life stories. Through thoughtful conversation and professional writing, memories are shaped into beautifully written chapters that honor the Storyteller’s voice and are compiled into a lasting keepsake.
-
Diamond Memoirs is for older adults who want to reflect on their lives and preserve their stories for future generations. Many participants are parents or grandparents, but anyone who values legacy and personal history is welcome. Storytellers don’t need to be a minimum age. Those nearing retirement and/or adding a third generation to their family often find this an ideal time to begin.
-
No. Storytellers simply share their memories through conversation. I do the writing, organizing, and editing, while preserving the Storyteller’s words, voice, and intent.
-
Stories often include childhood memories, family life, relationships, work experiences, milestones, challenges, traditions, and reflections. Storytellers always decide what to share. Conversations move at a comfortable pace, and no topic is ever required.
-
The process involves guided sessions focused on selected themes and chapters. Conversations are recorded and notes taken so they can be transformed into a written narrative. Sessions are scheduled at the Storyteller’s own pace.
-
Sessions may be held in person or remotely, depending on what works best for the Storyteller, and are held at an agreed-upon location of the Storyteller’s choice. Sessions last about one hour and are scheduled at mutually convenient times.
-
Unlike other lifebook options, I take care of everything. There is no work on the part of the Storyteller. Shaped by my background in counseling and gerontology, I listen carefully and guide conversations with sensitivity and respect, keeping the focus on storytelling and legacy. While this is not therapy, my approach is human-centered, with trust and connection at the heart of the process.
-
Yes. Chapters are written using the Storyteller’s voice. Quotes are preserved, and the narrative reflects the Storyteller’s perspective. Nothing is fictionalized or embellished.
-
Some families gift the experience to a loved one. Others participate by helping select themes. The Storyteller always remains in control. The Storyteller may appoint one person to help review a digital draft as part of the fact-checking process (for factual accuracy only). Please note, to allow the Storyteller the opportunity to speak freely and to minimize distractions or complications, unless otherwise discussed, only the Storyteller and I will be present for any sessions.
-
Many participants begin with a 1-Carat Solitaire or single session/chapter to see how the process feels. The entry-level option allows stories to be captured gradually, without pressure or long-term commitment.
-
Diamond Memoirs offers both an entry-level experience and a more comprehensive memoir package.
The 1-Carat Solitaire allows Storytellers to capture individual chapters one at a time and/or over time. The 3-Carat Signature is a more complete memoir experience that brings multiple chapters together into a collection.
-
Yes. Storytellers may add on sessions at any time and schedule each session at their own pace. Those who begin with the 1-Carat Solitaire may apply completed chapters toward a 3-Carat Signature.
-
There is no fixed timeline. Sessions are scheduled with flexibility and respect for the Storyteller’s energy and preferences. Some work steadily, while others space sessions out over months. If a specific time frame or deadline is desired, we can discuss whether it is possible.
-
Yes. Privacy matters. Everything shared during the process is handled with care and kept confidential. Personal information is shared only with those the Storyteller approves or, when needed, with trusted professionals, including a proofreader and printer, who are involved in creating the final memoir.
-
Participants receive professionally written chapters. A beautifully formatted hard-bound book is included with the 3-Carat Signature option.
A digital flip-book of each chapter is included with the 1-Carat Solitaire option. A hard-bound book may be added once at least three chapters are purchased.
Additional hard-bound books may be ordered for an additional charge, and additional volumes are an option if more chapters are completed later.
