Born in Washington, D.C., Janet Adrienne Mills grew up in Birmingham, Michigan studying classical dance there and in Detroit, New York and Chicago. In 1950, she left for the University of Wisconsin in Madison. A journalisim major specializing in women's issues, Jan met her future husband, Don Haack, in her freshman year.
Just over a year after their marrige, Jan and Don left for the interior of British Guiana and began the adventure, which her book, A Light on the Runway, and her husband's book, Bush Pilot in Diamond Country cover.
After returning to the United States Jan continued to help her husband with his various enterprises, one of which led the two of them and their four children to live on the island of Grenada for fourteen years. While there Jan produced The Grenada Visitor's Guide, a monthly publication for tourists and helped Don run the Run Runner, a popular excursion for cruise ship passengers wisiting the island.
Now living on 70 acres north of Charlotte, North Carolina, Jan and Don own and operate Donald Haack Diamonds and Fine Gems, neatly closing the circle of interest in diamonds from mines to customer. As an advocate of the arts, Jan is on the Board of Directors of Opera Carolina.
